A year ago today I was going through changes. Major changes. Changes that caused me so much emotional stress, I didn’t think I was going to make it through. I didnt understand any of it, but I knew I had no choice but to move forward. Why? Because of the “divine complications” that occur when your dreams are coming true.
Within one week, my job lost me.. Yea, THEY lost ME and I had to move out of my apartment of two years. With most of my belongings in storage and no real reason to come back to the USA, I was on my way to Prague,Czech Republic to teach and perform for 6 weeks.
As I sat in JFK airport, you would think I would be excited. Truth be told, I wasn’t. I was speechless and uncertain. But, I knew it was the right thing to do. It wasn’t until I settled into sleep, stretched out on the first flight to London that I realized..WOW.. this is really happening.I’m getting exactly what I’ve asked for.Its always been my dream to travel, teach, and perform all over the world and BOOM!
A year later, I’m in an apartment that I absolutely love and ADORE! and my dreams are STILL coming true.
It’s interesting. As a child, I didn’t really have dreams. I couldn’t. I just couldn’t fathom how me, a little girl from brooklyn who grew up believing she was ugly, could make it. So I just didn’t dream. I would watch music videos and see all those little kids performing with Michael Jackson and I’d be like “Why and how did they get there? and Why and how am I not up there?” But, I guess there was always something inside of me.. no matter how quiet, that knew the life I was meant to live. I’m so humbled and thankful to be living my dreams.
Thank you God for ordering my steps, leading me in the right direction and always putting me exactly where I’m supposed to be.
On a recent flight, I was seated in the first row of the coach section. YAY! I can get on AND off of the plane faster and of course my favorite.. I get to see ALL of the wonderful events occurring.. IN FIRST CLASS!!!
Aaah yes.. I get privileges such as watching the first class passengers sip on complimentary beverages as soon we take off, enjoy the smell of their delicious meals (being served to them with the best of service ) and best of all, I get to see it all through a lovely sheer curtain! YAY ME!
Oh and did I mention I get first dibs on feeling that BRISK air conditioning while watching the first class passengers get blankets? Oh Joy!!
Don’t worry First Class, Its coach for now, but soon it will be my own private jet! How ya like dat!!!!

LA… what can I say? I had a blast.
It was my first time visiting LA on business and I loved it. I got the opportunity to perform with Mr. West (again) and spend quality with quality people. It was a nice change of scenery for me.
Gorgeous heterosexual men, Palm trees, parties in the Hollywood hills, The Fly Guys, Santa Monica Beach, In N Out Burger, Dancers, Family time, The Grove, Destini Rogers, Hollywood walk of fame, traffic, Mel’s Diner, Hancock Park and Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles. (Oh God how I love Roscoe’s)
DASSSITTT! (for now)

Okay, I know.. I’ve been MIA… but trust me, it’s for good reasons, SWEAR!!
God is madd popping! My life has become a steady flow of getting paid to do what I love. I have been dancing, choreographing, hosting, acting, singing, and of course looking gorgeous.
I’ve always wanted a tattoo. I just wanted to be certain I got something I could live with for the rest of my life; a tattoo that means something. I refuse to walk around with my name (like I don’t know who I am), or someone else’s (womp), or something ridiculous like a dragon or butterfly wings on my ass. (No comment)
So, I did it. I went with a bunch of friends and boom got a tattoo. Go me! It took all of 6 minutes (although it seemed like hours).
I went through a really rough time last summer. And as ridiculous as it may sound, Jay-Z’s verse on the Power Remix really helped me push through and come out on top. It was then that I re-realized to never let ANYONE AT ALL steal my power. So boom, a power outlet; to be a constant reminder that I’ve got the Power! And I always will (cue music & Rosie Perez’s dance scene)
Now with that being said, in my opinion, anyone with multiple tattoos has got to be a psycho. Mmmhmm, I said it. A psycho crazed, out of their mind, maniacal, a lunatic, Kings County G Building… you get the point. That shit hurt. It’s uncomfortable and undesirable. As beautiful as tattoos are, they are certainly not for me. Oh and did I mention that I’m not good with needles? Yea, I get light-headed, dizzy and I start to lose feeling in my hands when around needles for too long lol. Needless to say my tattoo is still not done. (And who knows if it will ever get done lol)
Now when I walk in everybody do the Power Clap…
Shernita’s Gumbo… You know you love it….
Another beautiful thing here in Prague, is Love. There is love everywhere. Young and old. Couples are everywhere, openly displaying how they feel for each other. From kisses, to warm embraces to holding hands. It’s here in Prague. It’s really awesome to see elderly couples appearing to be as much in love now as they were when they were first married. Yes, married. I’ve seen a lot of wedding bands. A lot. No one is ashamed to let the world know that they are in a relationship, and they are proud to be “taken”.
I must say it’s a nice change from NYC. I notice that there’s a lot less PDA (Public Displays of Affection ) going on in the states. I feel like it’s frowned upon. It makes me wonder if NYC has got it all wrong….
My future husband and I will be very wealthy (just putting that into the Universe) , and we will definitely come to Prague to join in on the PDA action. Or shit, we’ll get that PDA poppin right in NYC.. who knows…
Yummy isn’t it?
Things have been really wonderful here in Prague. It’s countdown time to my return home and I know yall miss me (don’t front). I’ve been having a magical time with some really magical people. The history and beauty of this place is breathtaking. The parks here are to die for. I don’t think there’s a park in America that can compare to any of the parks here. I’ve visited Petcin, Vysehrad and Stromovka park. Stunning! (Pics on facebook soon)
I’ve also had a blast participating in Stare Offs. Yes, Stare Offs. I’ve been trying to see how long I can stare back at someone or how many different faces I can make. People have been smiling back lately, which makes it more fun. However, today was a first in the history of Shernita’s Shenanigans. Today, I participating in my first Growl Off. Yes, a Growl Off. What is a Growl Off you say? Well let me tell you…
So I’m minding my sweet lil business walking down the street and a small boy stares me up and down then proceeds to run towards me arms open wide. I thought he was going to hug me but at the last minute he decides to swipe my leg. Then he turns around, stops and growls at me. Now, you know Grandmas ain’t raise no punk, and shit I’m from BK Who da fuck want war????… So I growl back. This growling match continues for what seemed to be like 5 long minutes. Then his older sister comes to the door confused as hell, to the point where she runs back inside screaming. Then his mother comes to the door and is clearly baffled at this duel that’s occurring. I was a lil nervous but I couldn’t back down not when I was this far in the game. So the growling continues until I am laid out on the sidewalk growling and cracking up and the lil boy has now run away smiling. Andddddd Scene!
I know this sounds like a Charlie Murphy True Hollywood Story but I promise this really happened. Fa Real… there were witnesses. Ask if you don’t believe me.. fa real…
New Videos from Prague on http://www.youtube.com/shernitaquintel
Here in Prague, the culture is to drink alcohol…all the time. And I do mean all the time. As soon as you sit down for a meal , you have to order some sort of alcoholic beverage. Wine is cheaper than Coca Cola here, unreal.
I don’t drink for fun, or just for the sake of having a drink.. I drink to get it in! I drink to get tipsy or drunk and I don’t even do that too often. With that being said, I’ve been forced to drink alcohol at almost every outing I’ve been to. (and lets not talk about the lack of chicken & the excess of beef and pork on the menus)
Now as a new girl in this culture, I want to live it up while I’m here and also not offend anyone. This country is new to me so I want to try new things. However, the lifestyle here is not for me. Cigarette smoking, swine eating & alcohol drinking.. I’ll pass on that.
The men here are aggressive as shit. It’s taken a lot for me to not curse someone out. Anyone that knows me, knows that when I say no, I mean no. It doesn’t me maybe, or perhaps later, No is No. They say You want a drink? I say No thank you. They say aww c’mon have a drink , I say nah im good. Next thing you know, when the waitress returns, she places a drink in front of me. WTF?! So since I’ve gotten here, I’ve sucked it up (literally) and drank the drink.
Then I thought about it.. Shernita.. that’s not you! Aren’t you the girl who stands up for herself, the girl who doesn’t do anything that’s going to make her unhappy? Shernita, aren’t you the girl who encourages others to live the way they want to live instead of being so influenced by others?
Man fuck this! I gotta be me, no matter where I am. (Of course being respectful of others) So, for the rest of my time here, if I don’t want to drink then I won’t drink and that goes for everything else too. And if a drink that I didn’t request “magically” appears, Imma let that shit sit right there. Real talk I don’t want drinks, I want money so ante up off them Korunas.
Nothing is free in Prague. And I do mean nothing! When you sit down to eat, the only thing you won’t pay for are utensils. Water? Gotta pay for it. Ketchup? Yup that too. You even have to pay to use the restroom at certain establishments during certain times. Lucky for me, I haven’t had to go THAT bad thank God.
I just finished performing and judging at Dancer of the Year 2011. Dancer of the Year is an annual televised dance battle. We had to choose 10 finalists to battle their asses off and eventually choose a winner. Real talk, it was tough. I honestly wanted to choose them both. The venue was dope, SaSaZu. Dope club and restaurant. It was awesome. Of course I looked stunning. And my performances… life changing! One of the things I can appreciate (at times) is the simplicity of being overseas; I signed some girls’s ticket. Like yea, autographs are poppin out here. Go figure.
Battles are a big thing out here. There is a clear separation between commercial dance and underground. It’s like you’re not allowed to do both. I’m thankful that I have found a way to be successful but doing both, I hope the people here take notice. Im about making this money (Dollars, Krowns, Euro, Yen, Pounds, scrilla, dough, cheese, cheddar, Gwap etc) doing it all from ballet, to modern, to chicken noodle souping and cat daddying all over the world!
Everyone loves me here.. (of course lol) I honestly don’t feel like I’m with “strangers”. I feel like Im with my family in another country. I am well taken care of. I’m around really good people. God is poppin. ( does the Cat Daddy for Jesus)
Tadow! More coming soon!!
Twitter.com/shernitasofly u know u want to
I love Prague. The weather is beautiful, the city is beautiful and I’m beautiful. What more could a girl ask for?
Things are definitely different here. The amount of cigarette smoking is killer! The jig is definitely down on that one. Imma need to find some sort of febreze situation, because me smelling like cigarettes is not popping. So you can run and tell dat.. homeboy.
Honestly, there aren’t much disappointments here except for how far behind this country is. It’s a shame. In the club, not only are girls wearing flats (God help us ) but they are rocking hard body to Jenny from the Block and Yeah by Usher! But even on a more serious note, the internet is sooo far behind here. I don’t understand how the internet isn’t the same anywhere I mean after all it is the WORLD WIDE WEB! WTF! I googled Kanye West (of course) and the first video that popped up is Stronger. WTF! Ole boy has a brand new album out Czech Republic!!! (ps I think I saw a poster of a Wyclef album posted in a music store) This jig continues to fall…
The stares that I get are absolutely astounding. I mean, people will stop and stare and stay staring as I pass. It’s the rudest thing but its also pretty flattering. (Thank you God for this beauty)
There aren’t many things open in the late night, which is something I’m definitely not used to and dogs are allowed everywhere and I do mean everywhere. Restaurants have treats and water bowls for the dogs when they come in lol. All in all, I’m having a blast and this is exactly what I needed. (Does booty drop for God)
Up next.. my sightseeing!!! Stay tuned!!
U know you love it…
I’ve been in Prague for just almost a week now and I’m having a blast. I’ve been extremely busy since I touched down. From rehearsals, to performances, to teaching classes, to meet and greets, to parties, I’ve done it in less than a week. All while dealing with a bit of jetlag (that kicked in a day later lol), a lil bit of sickness (that kicked in on the plane ride here) and just getting used to things here (that’s still kickin in )
Everyone here is extremeeellyyy nice to me and everyone speaks English! Thank God! Czech language is hard as hell, but trust and believe Im working on it.
So I know yall are wondering where the hell is Prague, what are the differences between New York and Prague and what the hell is it all about???! Lucky for you, I’m going to tell you….
Prague is the capital of Czech Republic. It’s pretty much the center of Europe as Germany, Poland and Austria surround it. I found out that Czechoslovakia is non existent and it’s been this way for about 20 years now since the end of Communism ( I had no clue and thank God). There is Czech Republic and there is Slovakia. 2 totally different countries. Makes me wonder what the hell were my teachers teaching or was I just not paying attention (probably a lil of both)
Prague is an amazingly beautiful city. Every building looks luxurious. (Pics coming soon) However, in such a beautiful city, most people are .. sour (for lack of a better word) There isn’t much smiling or joy in the people here. Everyone seems madd tight all the time. I was told it’s due to the communism in the past. Hopefully my beautiful self and beautiful energy will change some of that. There also isn’t much diversity. So far I’ve seen 4 black children, and 2 black women (including myself)!
Czech’s money is in Korunas(krowns), they use military time, you need a key to get in and out of every building, apartments are called “flats”, power outlets are circular, you have to push a button to flush the toilet, you have to hold the shower head to get ya wash on, cobble stone streets everywhere, there’s cookie crisp cereal, H & M, McDonalds, Burger King, KFC , and an Asian population (of course)!!!
So! I know that was a lot of information at once and I know you loved it! More Gumbo from Prague coming reallll soon!!!! Subscribe so you can stay updated on my adventures from Prague!
